What is recovery time in Vertebroplasty?

Patient has to stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 hours after Vertebroplasty procedure. It takes about an hour after vertebroplasty to harden the cement. Patient has to take bed rest for the first 24 hours after vertebroplasty. Today, Vertebroplasty is done by advanced minimally invasive technique which involves smaller incisions instead of big tissue cut. How Vertebroplasty surgical procedure is performed?

Vertebroplasty surgical procedure is performed by an expert Spine Surgeon in a hospital. It takes about an hour for one vertebra and generally includes various steps: • Patient has to wear a patient’s gown and lie on a procedure table. Then imaging team will insert an IV to provide fluids and medications as well as imaging team will also attach devices to monitor the vital signs. • General anesthesia is given to patient. Patient has to lie face down to expose the spine. The affected area of spine is cleaned. • The surgeon will numb the skin and muscles with an injection of local anesthetic. A needle is inserted through the skin and into the fractured spinal vertebra. Real-time X-rays guide the proper needle placement. • Once the needle is in place, the surgeon will inject medical-grade cement into the vertebra and then remove the needle. The cement hardens within 15 to 20 minutes. • In this way, the surgeon repeats the process for each fractured vertebra. Additional X-ray i

What is a Vertebroplasty

Vertebroplasty is an advanced minimally invasive surgical procedure mainly performed to stabilize compression fractures in the spine. In this procedure, the spine surgeon inserts bone cement into the cracked or broken vertebrae. The cement hardens within few minutes and provides instant stability and supports the spine. Vertebroplasty relieves pain and increase mobility in patients who are suffering from severe pain due to compression fracture. Why Vertebroplasty is performed?

Spine surgeon can recommend a Vertebroplasty to treat vertebral compression fractures in the spine. Vertebroplasty is mainly used to treat conditions such as: • Cancerous Fracture: Cancerous tumor weakens the vertebral bones and increases the risk for vertebral compression fractures. • Osteoporotic Fracture: Osteoporosis causes the loss of bone mass & bones which are porous. This condition weakens bones and increases the risk for vertebral compression fractures. • Reinforcement of a vertebral bone or multiple vertebrae before a surgical stabilization procedure • Vertebral Hemangioma: In this condition, abnormal overgrowth of blood vessels occur within a vertebra. • Vertebral Osteonecrosis: This is also known as bone death. Osteonecrosis is a rare condition. To know more about advanced diagnosis & treatments for Spine diseases, consult us today.
